Shelby Needs your Help! So does our Shelter!

We entered Shelby into the Bissell Pet Photo Contest and she is quickily gaining votes!!  We need all the votes we can get!  If we can win for 1 week, we will make it into the finals where we have a chance to win 10k donation to the shelter of our choice!!  Also Shelby could be featured on a bissell product box, but we don't care about that!  We could really use the 10k for our shelter!  You can vote once per day, and the voting ends on Jan 18th, so could you please, take a second, go vote, share this information for us and help us out?  It would be greatly appreciated!!!

My poor Shiloh is sick

Shiloh is having some eye issues.  This morning she would not open her eyes, so we started doing some checking, and both of her eyes were really really red. We decided to do the safe thing and took her to the vet tonight.  This is a pic of us waiting for her eyes to get numb so she could get a pressure test done.

They are not 100% sure what is wrong.  It could be Dry Eye, but not sure yet.  They have her on Artificial Tears and Neo-Poly-Dex for the next 7 days, and then we go back to the vet.  Here tear production is 1/3rd what it should be and her eye pressure was very low.

She seems so sad to me!!  She is still having a hard time opening her eyes.  My poor Shiloh!

Her birthday is also coming up!  November the 8th she will be 9 years old!
If you want to send her a Card, or a letter or anything, our Address is

Gone to the Snow Dogs
P.O. Box 12
Alpena, MI 49707

Or just leave her some comments!  I will read them all to her.  My poor little girl.

The Siberian Husky Working Dog

So this morning, I read this article http://www.bakersfield.com/news/local/x735123902/SHERRY-DAVIS-Keeping-your-Husky-working-dog-busy and it prompted me to write an email to her.  I thought the article was very well written, but I felt compelled to write a response to her.  Here is the response I wrote!

Happy Friday from Shiloh, Shelby, and Their Mom!

I read your article, and can tell you have been having some issues with your husky.  It says you are a dog trainer, but I am sure you already know, huskies are very very special, and have to be treated differently then other dogs.

First thing I noticed was what you said about being at work all day, and the dog destroying things.  Do you crate train?  I have experience with two Siberian Huskies.  One is 8 years old, and one is 2.  I crate trained both of my girls.  It is not only safer for the dogs, it helps so they don't destroy your stuff.  When a dog tears something up when you are not around, they chance choking on parts they are chewing off, and getting hurt.  So crate training really is a safe way to keep the dog safe, and your items safe.

Shiloh would stayed in her crate every time we left the house until she was about 3 years old.  Then we would slowly let her have the run of the house for small amounts of time, and eventually she didn't need to be put in her crate anymore.  Shelby is only 2, so she still goes in hers when we leave.  My husband and I also both worth full time.  Both of my dogs LOVED their crate.  They even will go and just sleep in it when we are home.  We always leave the door open on them when we are home.  They need to understand this is a safe place for them

The escaping part.  There are a few more costly ways to fix this.  You can dig below your fence and put in blocks or rocks, so it's harder for the dog to dig under, or you can go higher on your fence so they can't jump.  We didn't want to do either of those things, so even though we have a fenced in yard, Shelby is not allowed off of her runner unless we are outside playing with her. My dogs are of course, indoor dogs, and they only really use the yard as a bathroom, and once in a while for playing.  Huskies are by nature, pack animals, and should never just be left alone outside.

Getting our 2nd husky was one of the best things we ever did.  Shiloh became a much more balanced dog when we got her a compatible playmate. So that is another thought for you.

Exercise can be hard when you are both working full time. We do like you said in your article, the hiking, backpacking, biking, and sledding with our girls.  Another thing you can do, is train your dog to use a treadmill.  It's a nice option to have if you do end up running out of time for taking your dog for a walk or a run.

Those are just my thoughts.  I loved your article!  I wish you would have added a picture of Koda!  You can check out our girls at http://www.GonetotheSnowDogs.com or on their Youtube channel at http://www.Youtube.com/GonetotheSnowDogs

It's that time of year! Time to go Topless in our Jeep Wrangler! When we bought it last year, we didn't have a safe way of keeping our dogs in the backseat, so they could never really come have fun with us if the top was down. This year we invested in a Cargo Restraint System by Smitty Built. The girls LOVE it! We took them for a short ride around town last night, and they had a blast!

Siberian Husky Shelby hurt her foot! (She is better now though)

To see more of our Beautiful Huskies, Check out our Channel and Please subscribe!
http://www.youtube.com/GoneToTheSnowDogs

When I first took Shelby biking she didn't have the patience to wait to start running.  So she would try to run and her front feet would drag a bit on the sidewalk, well becuase of this, she got road burn on her foot!  Silly dog.  She hopped around the house for a few days, and we had to put cream on her foot.  She is completely healed now, and her new Doggy shoes should be here this week.

I think part of the reason she hurt herself was it was the first bike ride of the season, so the pads of her feet weren't quite ready for it.  But hopefully the shoes we bought will help her out!  Thanks for watching!

Siberian Husky Shelby pulls a Sled January 2009 St. Bernard Moonshine

To see more of our Beautiful Huskies, Check out our Channel and Please subscribe!
http://www.youtube.com/GoneToTheSnowDogs

This video was taken in January of 2009. We had an abnormal amount of snowfall last winter. It seems like we were constantly buried in snow! One weekend in January we were puppy sitting for my parents St. Bernard, Moonshine. Between Shelby and Moonshine, Shiloh was getting a bit irritated with these two puppies always playing and making noise. So we left the house for a bit to give Shiloh some peace and quite, and took Shelby and Moonshine, and took my youngest sister, Rebecca, and went and did some sledding!

Moonshine passed away at the age of 3 last April, she is dearly missed by everyone. My parents do have another St. Bernard now, and her name is Sunshine. You have probably seen her in some of our other videos.

The Easter Bunny came a day early to our house! He sure brought Shiloh and Shelby some fun toys!! Even plastic eggs filled with treats! Such special girls they are!

You may notice Shelby hopping a bit in this video. We ran with the bike yesterday, and sometimes she doesn't want to quit. I think her pads are a bit sore. We used her Musher's secrect, and this morning she seems a lot better! Silly dog! She needs some new shoes for running

We hope you all have a Happy Easter!

I thought it would be fun to see how long it took Shiloh and Shelby to demolish a dental bone.  Of course, it didn't take them long at all!

Shiloh and Shelby got invited to their first ever Dog Birthday Party!! Oh and what a blast it was!! There was over 16 dogs that attended, 4 of them were from our local shelter. It was nice to see them get out and interact with the people! The party was held at the K-9 Clubhouse, which is the indoor dog park here in our home town.

I think we were at the party for around 2 hours, and we had a blast! So many happy dogs!! Max turned 3 years old. He is the big Black Lab in the video. I will point him out towards the middle. :)

On a side note, I would like to thank you guys for helping me get over 500 subscribers!!!! You are so awesome!!! Thanks so much for supporting us!
